What is OSB(Oriented Strand Board)

OSB is one of the new varieties of particle board. During the formation of particle paving, the upper and lower surfaces of the oriented strand particle board are arranged longitudinally in the fiber direction of the mixed particle board, while the core layer particles are arranged horizontally to form a three-layer structural board embryo, which is then hot pressed into the oriented strand particle board. The shape of this type of particle board requires a relatively large aspect ratio, and the thickness of the particles is slightly thicker than that of ordinary particle boards. The methods of directional paving include mechanical orientation and electrostatic orientation. The former is suitable for large particle oriented paving, while the latter is suitable for small particle oriented paving. The directional paving of oriented particle board gives it the characteristic of high strength in a certain direction and is often used as a structural material instead of plywood

OSB is a particle board made mainly from small diameter wood of broad-leaved forests, and fast-growing wood, and processed through processes such as deoiling, drying, gluing, directional paving, and hot pressing. It is also known as oriented strand board. It has excellent nail grip, self strength, environmental friendliness, and moisture resistance. Especially environmentally friendly, using environmentally friendly isocyanate adhesive (MDI) as a bonding agent, without harmful odors, is healthy and environmentally friendly

Production process of OSB

1. Preparation of raw materials

OSB is made of small diameter wood and fast-growing wood with a diameter of 8 to 10 centimeters. The wooden raw materials are peeled and impurities removed through specialized equipment, and then processed into thin flat particles with a certain geometric shape.

2. Drying

The dryer for oriented strand board generally uses a single channel dryer, using conventional medium temperature drying technology. The entire drying process is divided into pre drying stage, drying stage, and equilibrium stage, and ultimately needs to ensure that the moisture content of the chipboard is controlled at around 2%.

3. Particle sorting

There are two forms of particle sorting, one is to use mechanical methods to sort particles according to geometric dimensions through grids with different apertures or set gaps, and the other is to sort particles with different densities and suspension ratios by adjusting the airflow speed.

4. Directional paving

Mix the surface layer of shavings with glue and arrange them vertically in the fiber direction, while the core layer of shavings is arranged horizontally to form a three-layer structure of the board embryo. Finally, a multi-layer structure of the board is made by hot pressing.

Characteristics of OSB

1. High material yield

Compared to other types of artificial boards, oriented strand particle board has a higher yield, and the production of oriented strand particle board using small diameter grade logs has changed the soft nature of small diameter wood materials, making it a high-quality artificial board with high strength and stability. This not only improves the utilization rate of wood resources in China, but also alleviates the pressure of imported log material scarcity.

2. Safety and environmental protection

In the production process, isocyanate (MDI) was used instead of traditional phenolic resin adhesives, with low application amount and low formaldehyde release, which will not cause harm to the environment and human health. It is a safe and environmentally friendly green material.

3. Superior performance

The physical and mechanical properties of OSB are far superior to ordinary particle board, mainly having the following characteristics:

(1) Anti deformation, anti peeling, anti warping, with characteristics such as uniform strength and stable size.

(2) Anticorrosive, mothproof, strong flame retardant, suitable for outdoor and high-temperature environments;

(3) Good waterproof performance, can be exposed to natural environments and humid conditions for a long time;

(4) Having good mechanical processing performance, it can be cut, drilled, and planed in any direction;

(5) It has excellent insulation and sound insulation effects, and good paint performance.

Application of OSB

1. Furniture

The excellent physical and mechanical properties of oriented particle board determine that it can be used as a load-bearing part for furniture such as sofas, TV cabinets, bedside cabinets, tables and chairs, and can also be used in panel furniture to make cabinet partitions, desktop panels, door panels, and so on.

2. Interior decoration

Oriented strand board is highly decorative, and different tree species can present different textures and colors. Unlike delicate and smooth artificial boards, the oriented  strand particle board has a unique and rough texture on its surface due to the vertical and horizontal arrangement of the flakes. As a decorative element, it has a natural and vivid effect when applied to indoor decoration.

Oriented strand particle board is an internationally recognized universal inspection free packaging material, which has better strength and waterproof performance than solid wood board.
